Bible Study

Had our second (or third) bible study last night. I'm getting more and more excited about our group every time we meet and I think its going to be a great year.

We are working our way through Galatians and last night knocked over chapter one. It's great to wrestle with God's word as a group.

Lots and lots to learn about leading a bible study though. Adri and I feel thoroughly ill-equipped to lead this bunch of Christians and feel the weight of the task.

What do you think makes a a great bible study? What are some things you've done or seen done that have worked really well?

a group of people who don't come to get stuff out of it for themselves... but who come for the sake of others... when that happens... you get stuff out of it as well!!

changing the group dynamics often during the night. kick off question with the person beside you. share them. split into groups of 3 or 4. share with whole group. split into 2sor 3s again... then share with the whole group. finish with smaller groups for prayer... maybe gender specific - especially if doing accountability and deep sharing stuff.
----------
there's 2 things...
could say more - but will let your other avid readers do that.
if you haven't yet got it - get hold of leading better bible studies by rod and karen morris... it's very good.... got some great stuff on adult education - group dynamics - some get to know you games + stuff on understanding the passage and packaging a study.

peaceout

I found Growth Groups by Colin Marshall really helpful as well - I'm sure you could borrow it off someone - we have two copies but we're in Perth...Surely ME has it.

Thanks guys!

Have read both those books, but they are well worth reading again - leading better bible studies especially.

Is there anything for you guys that has been particularly memorable or fantastic about any of your bible study groups?

- This year we are taking turns sharing our testimony - one person who has said that they would be happy to share does so before the study starts. It has been really encouraging to hear how God brought people to Himself and also is great practice for all of us in how to share our faith while still in a 'safe' environment.
- Praying in small groups has been particularly helpful for the girls I think. We have a group of 12-13 people.
- Matt suggests that a whiteboard can be really helpful especially when brainstorming ideas or explaining. And doing things like getting people to draw something rather than always write words or talk about things can be great for those people who learn visually etc.
- Also this year, our group is making sure that we don't just focus on ourselves in prayer so each week, the person who brings supper brings info about a person doing God's work who we can pray for, so we are thinking/praying outside our group and about the gospel being spread.

Thanks Libby!
They sound great! I like the sharing testimony idea and the praying for someone else especially. A great way to make sure everyone feels involved.
Whiteboard might make me feel too much like a teacher! But I'll keep it in mind.
Definitely going to give prayer in small groups a go - maybe every couple of weeks.

Last night we had the suggestion of maybe doing prayer at the start so its not the bit tacked on at the end.
We went a bit long last night, but there was some great discussion on Gal2:1-10.
